Why you should spend your summer vacation in the mountains

If you’re just thinking about where to spend your summer vacation, imagine the following scene for a moment: You’re standing on a mountaintop, taking a deep breath of fresh air and enjoying the peace and view for a few minutes before descending to the nearest hut and ordering a cool refreshing drink. If this idea puts a grin on your face, then a summer vacation in the mountains is just the thing for you.

For those who are undecided, here are a few arguments why it’s worth packing your hiking boots instead of your beach towel – or maybe even both.


The closeness to nature is one of the main reasons why a vacation in the mountains inspires more and more people. City dwellers in particular are looking for a balance in their hectic everyday lives. If you are fascinated by images of turquoise high mountain lakes, gigantic glacier caves, and waterfalls, then you don’t have to travel to New Zealand or Canada, but simply take a look towards the Alps, for example.

The high mountains in Europe stretch 1,200 kilometers through several countries (France, Monaco, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Germany, Austria, Italy, Slovenia). Over 4,000 meter high peaks and numerous valleys provide habitat for humans and animals and open up a great outdoor adventure playground on the one hand and a huge recreational space on the other.

Rare animals, like the alpine salamander or the lammergeier, and also plants like the alpine rose, which can often be found in spring, give the mountain region a unique and original charm. When there are no cars or noise far and wide, but only the sounds of nature, the wind, and the birds, we feel very close to nature – no matter if we are standing on the mountain top or lying by the lake. In the mountains, it is easy to find peace, originality, and also one of the other natural wonders. The thundering waterfalls, imposing rock formations, such as in the Dolomites in South Tyrol or the ice caves at the Dachstein glacier are just a few fascinating places where nature amazes us.


If you don’t feel like lying lazily on the beach all day, you can definitely live out your urge to move into the mountains. A big advantage: even in high summer the temperatures in the mountains are still pleasant. Nevertheless, you can always cool off in a cool mountain lake. Exercise in the fresh air every day – what a great contrast to everyday office life. For us, the mountains are like a huge open-air gym. We are sure that everyone will find a sport they enjoy here. It doesn’t always have to be 10-hour hikes or energy-sapping mountain bike tours, but a leisurely bike ride, a walk around the lake, or a Segway tour can also make you happy. There is an incredible number of ways to get active in the mountains and just as many ways to relax.

Afterward, you can recharge your batteries in one of the numerous wellness hotels by treating yourself to a massage, relaxing in the pool, and then going for a delicious multi-course meal. For us personally, there is nothing better than falling into bed in the evening with heavy legs. We simply feel alive during and also after hiking.


When you think of a summer vacation in the mountains, the first thing that comes to mind is a hiking and mountain peaks. But also in the valleys hide numerous recreational opportunities. How about golfing, fishing, windsurfing, cycling, rafting, canyoning, stand-up paddling, Segway riding, or horseback riding? As you can see, you can also work up a sweat in the valley or simply try something new. For example, if you’ve never been on an e-mountain bike or Segway, take advantage of your summer vacation for such unforgettable experiences. Especially if the weather is too unstable for a long hiking tour, it’s worth spending the day in the valley. You can abort your climbing route in the high ropes course faster than a long hike if a thunderstorm is coming up.

By the way, the valleys are also home to fantastic mountain lakes, whose turquoise waters and sandy beaches are reminiscent of the Caribbean. Those who bathe at the Wörthersee, for example, will not miss the sea – promised.


The movement and the proximity to nature act as an anti-stress program for many people. Not only the body finds a balance in everyday life, but also the mind. For some, it means taking time for yourself, testing new limits, and feeling the endorphins as you climb to the top of the mountain. For the other, time in nature means simply being able to switch off and create space in the mind for positive thoughts.
