Advent in South Tyrol is a wonderful time of year when people in the region celebrate the arrival of Christmas. During Advent, there are many different events and traditions to discover.
One of the best-known traditions in South Tyrol is Advent caroling, where groups of people parade through the streets singing Christmas carols. The Advent caroling takes place in many towns and villages and creates a festive atmosphere.
Another highlight of Advent in South Tyrol is the Christmas markets that take place in many towns and also some villages. The Christmas markets offer a variety of attractions, including stalls with Christmas gifts and handicraft products, carousels, and other rides, as well as delicious Christmas food and drinks.
However, there are not only Christmas markets in the towns, but also in beautiful places such as Lake Carezza or the Tauferer Waterfalls. In the midst of nature, the path is lit with torches until you reach small clearings where a few stalls then shine out of the snow-covered landscape. There, again, homemade products, drinks, and plenty of treats are on offer. The fairytale Christmas markets definitely invite you to linger together and also offer unique views of the snow-covered surroundings.
Another highlight during the Christmas season is the “Liora” light show at the Hofburg in Bressanone. “Liora” is a continuation of the “Soliman” light show, which was staged at the Hofburg a few years ago. The light show offers unique insights into the world of lights, accompanied by two actors and music. After the show, you can enjoy a warming mulled wine at the Christmas market right next door, on Brixen Cathedral Square, and also admire the large Advent calendar, which lights up new pictures every day on the windows on Cathedral Square.
A day of skiing is also a must during Advent in South Tyrol!
South Tyrol is a true paradise for skiers. The region offers a variety of ski slopes suitable for beginners and advanced skiers. Popular ski areas in South Tyrol are the Dolomites, Kronplatz, and Val Gardena.
The Dolomites are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are known for their breathtaking scenery and excellent ski slopes. Here skiers will find a wide range of snow-sure slopes and modern lifts.
But also Plose, Obereggen, and Alta Badia are known throughout Europe. Here, skiers will find a wide range of easy and intermediate slopes, but also some challenging runs for advanced skiers.
Kronplatz is also a popular skiing area in South Tyrol. With its 115 kilometres of slopes, it offers something for everyone. Kronplatz is particularly well known for its varied and challenging ski slopes. However, Kronplatz not only scores with its perfectly prepared ski slopes but also with plenty of alternatives, such as toboggan runs, ski tours, biathlon, cross-country skiing, or the swing at the mountain station, which gives you an incredible feeling of freedom and a fantastic view over the valleys of the Pustertal.
In addition, there is also the Lumen Museum or the Reinhold Messner Museum at the mountain station, which is definitely a must when visiting South Tyrol.
Furthermore, on the Würzjoch, at the foot of the Peitler Kofel, husky sled rides are also offered over metre-high blankets of snow. The enchanted silence, only the crunching of the snow as soon as the huskies appear and warm your hands with a warm cup of tea – what more could you want?!
If you want to avoid the mountains but still like to be active, you can visit one of the skating rinks. The Intercable Arena is the perfect place for this.
The arena where HC Pustertal plays its hockey games is also available for ice skating. But of course, you can also watch an HC Pustertal game from the stands and cheer on the “Wolves” comfortably with a mulled wine.
Not to forget the tradition of Advent wreaths in South Tyrol. Many Advent wreaths are still tied and decorated by hand. Every Advent Sunday, a candle is lit together at the table, accompanied by singing and praying, followed by a chat, a snack, and a warm cup of tea accompanied by Christmas music. Afterward, the Christmas mood is definitely pre-programmed.
In the various towns and villages, Advent concerts take place time and again, where you can let yourself be sprinkled with Christmas songs and sounds by choirs and music bands and immerse yourself in the Christmas magic. South Tyrol is definitely worth a visit during Advent and offers a variety of things to do to enjoy the time with a wide range of events and activities.
