5 reasons why it’s time to visit Slovenia

In the midst of the prominent tourist destinations of Italy, Austria and Croatia, there is an often unnoticed place full of natural wonders, cultural treasures and culinary delights.

Travelling is her passion. She loves discovering new cultures and being enchanted by the magic of the countries she visits.

We’re talking about Slovenia. A country that is often overshadowed by its better-known neighbours, but has much more to offer than just the motorway to the Adriatic. 😉 In this blog post, we take you into the world of Slovenia and reveal five reasons why this country should definitely be on your travel bucket list.
1

Short distances

Not in the mood for long journeys? From Vienna to Ljubljana it is only 4 hours by car, from Munich it is about 4.5 hours. From Graz, you can reach the capital of Slovenia in as little as 2 hours.

Travelling by train is also a great option: There is a daily direct EC connection to Ljubljana from Vienna. From Villach, you can take the train to the Slovenian capital three times a day. The EuroNight takes you comfortably and directly from Zurich, Feldkirch, Stuttgart and Munich to Ljubljana.

Flixbuses also operate. The routes within Slovenia are also easy to conquer. You can hike in the Alps in the morning and jump into the sea in the evening. Sounds good, right?

Unique natural paradise

Speaking of hiking in the Alps and jumping into the sea: Slovenia offers you an incredible variety of nature experiences that can hardly be combined in this way anywhere else.

Slovenia is the only Central European country that connects the Alps with the Mediterranean and the Karst landscape with the Pannonian Plain. Slovenia is also one of the most densely wooded destinations in the world.

Environmentally conscious travellers can confidently choose Slovenia as their destination, as it is the first country to proudly bear the official title of “Green Destination”. To achieve this, it had to meet 96% of the demanding sustainability criteria of the international organisation Green Destinations and establish sustainable tourism.

Another highlight: the country’s 87 thermal mineral springs and 12 natural spas. There are also many picturesque lakes, rivers and bodies of water that are of drinking water quality. The right to clean drinking water has even been enshrined in the Slovenian constitution.

Nature lovers should put these Slovenian experiences on their bucket list:

  • Explore the Slovenian Alps: Immerse yourself in the lush diversity of the Julian Alps, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, the der Karavanke Alps and the Pohorje Mountains.
  • Get to know thermal & Pannonian Slovenia: look forward to to a beautiful area with healing waters and the most beautiful paths to health and well-being. Numerous natural spas, such as Pomurje, Podčetrtek and Rogaška Slatina, are located between sun-drenched vineyards.
  • Exploring the Slovenian lakes: Slovenia has an incredible 1300 lakes. The largest lake in Slovenia is the Cerkniško jezero. A smaller, beautiful lake that should also be on your bucket list is Lake Blaguš.
  • Discover the Slovenian Adriatic coast: Slovenia’s coastline is less than 50 kilometres long, but all the more varied for it. Here you will experience steep cliffs, green meadows along the sea, natural beaches, promenades with picturesque bathing jetties, lidos and charming little towns.

Cultural diversity

Despite its small size, Slovenia is rich in cultural heritage. The charming cities of Ljubljana and Maribor offer historical sights, a lively art scene and cosy cafés. With just 280,000 inhabitants, Ljubljana is not only the heart, but also the largest city in the country. Stroll through the picturesque old town and don’t forget to visit Ljubljana Castle. The second largest city in Slovenia is Maribor. Perhaps surprisingly for some of you, if you are travelling to Maribor in winter, you can make your turns in the country’s largest ski resort, Mariborsko Pohorje, for example. Also interesting for culture lovers: A visit to the alpine settlement of Velika Planina, one of the few remaining high alpine pastoral settlements. You can reach the village all year round by cable car from the Kamniška Bistrica valley to Šimnovec. The medieval castle of Bled and the romantic island in Lake Bled are also real gems that tell stories of times gone by.

Culinary delights

After extensive nature and cultural experiences, hunger sets in. 😊 Slovenian cuisine is waiting to be discovered by you. Be sure to try it during your visit:
  • Krainer Sausage
  • Karster Prosciutto
  • Štruklji (Dough rolls, a sweet and savoury delight)
  • Potica (a filled, sweet roll cake made from yeast dough)
  • Slovenian beer
