Winter experience Mühlviertel

In the winter months, nature is wrapped in a very special dress. The treetops are snowed on, the babbling of the streams slowly dies away under the layer of ice, in the sunlight glistens & sparkles the snow-covered hills, icicles drip from the roofs and the muffled crunch of the snow accompanies us as we step & explore the surroundings. All these winter features put me instantaneously in a happy frame of mind. I am a real winter fan. If you want to experience these wonderful winter impressions far away from ski slopes & aprés ski in a more quiet way, I recommend a winter stay in the Mühlviertel. There you can really enjoy “Slow Living Winter”.

The Mühlviertel offers the best conditions for cross-country skiing fans or those who still want to try the traditional Nordic sport. By the way, cross-country skiing is one of the healthiest sports of all – since the whole body benefits from it. Exercise in the fresh air is good for the psyche, the metabolism is stimulated and the immune system is strengthened. What I personally find great about cross-country skiing is that you can also try out the sport with friends and talk comfortably. If you stay at the Falkensteiner Hotel & Spa Bad Leonfelden, you have the advantage that you can borrow your equipment directly at the hotel and from there you can also get to a cross-country ski trail. The most popular cross-country trails in Bad Leonfelden are as follows:

  • Sternsteinloipe | skating & classic track on about 10km, fee required.
  • Kastnerloipe | classic track, about 8km of pleasure, free of charge
  • Weigetschlag track | skating & classic track on different lengths (7, 6, or 3km), chargeable

Discover the region in a relaxed way with snowshoes. The idyllic surroundings at Sternstein are particularly good for walking. Often there are also “trial hikes” here with a guide to learn the basics such as the right stride length and walking speed. The popular Sternsteinrunde starts at the valley station of the Sternstein lifts, leads over the Pilzstein to the Sternsteinwarte, and then via the Waldschenke back to the starting point. The Waldschenke is also an ideal place for a leisurely break in the midst of the winter landscape. In terms of difficulty, the round is rated “easy” – which means that it is recommended for all chilly winter sports enthusiasts. In general, the Mühlviertel offers many more tours in different degrees of difficulty – click-through. Click here for the tours in the Mühlviertel.

Feel the wind in your face

Tobogganing does not only make children’s eyes shine – no, also in the adult circle it can be beautiful and fun at the same time if you explore the surroundings by toboggan instead of on foot, race, or pull your loved ones through the forest paths in the snow.

If you want it a little bigger – you can switch to the variant with a horse, there are some carriage rides offered on-site.

Gliding artfully over ice surfaces

On some natural ponds and artificial ice rinks, you can experience fun on the ice in the Mühlviertel. Only 15min away by car is Oberneunkirchen. There is a nice ice rink there, which can be used for pirouettes & chilly ice skating. The coolest ice rinks in the Mühlviertel can be found here.

So, that was our inspiration for the winter season in the beautiful Mühlviertel. In addition to Slow Living Winter activities, you can also enjoy great cuisine and soothing moments in the wellness area – especially at the Falkensteiner Hotel & Spa Bad Leonfelden. So stop by and make a relaxing winter weekend in Upper Austria!
