Interior Design Sneak Peak from Montafon: Part 2

Falkensteiner Montafon Mountain Resort
A look behind the scenes and into the creative minds of Vudafieri-Saverino Partners. How do you make cool statements in rooms and why is the new 5* Falkensteiner Hotel Montafon (coming Winter 2022) the absolute interior children’s paradise?!
  • Falkensteiner Hotel Montafon is a family hotel – What did you focus on during the planning stage?
We have always made sure that we include large and small narrative elements (even if it’s just details) that make the rooms stimulating for the youngest guests, and that we make all the rooms child-friendly. For example, there will be animals pointing the way to a particular environment, which adds a certain level of adventure that children are certainly looking for.  The inclusion of not only child-friendly elements but entire rooms dedicated to them – such as the special children’s pool and a seemingly hidden playroom under the main staircase – was a definite way we ensured that children would feel at home.

  • What criteria do you use when designing the room?
When designing hotel rooms, the aim is to make them as cosy as possible and to maintain a homely feeling in the rooms. The structure of the rooms is inspired by the Montafon houses, which are made of masonry and wood.  A special feature is the choice of colour palette, which focuses on a phenomenon unique to continental Europe: Indian summer, which is normally only found in the north-eastern USA.  This season is part of autumn, when the weather becomes much warmer and softer for a short time than in summer, while the trees glow in fiery reds and oranges, and given its rarity and specialness, we decided to make it a focal point of the interior design.
  • Do you think design is for children as important as for adults – why?
They certainly have the same value, maybe even more for children than for adults. In our work, we happened to design kindergartens in China for an important American brand, Gymboree Play and Music; a job that showed us the importance of creating a space where shapes, colours and materials stimulate children’s creativity and curiosity. Children have a completely different idea of spaces than adults, both in terms of height, proportions and the functions that each architectural form has for them: Every door is a space between two worlds, every room encloses a new environment to be discovered, every connection represents a journey. Even more than adults, children need a certain amount of light and good quality of architecture to feel comfortable in the space, as they are often much more sensitive to changes in these elements.
  • Which design element do you prefer to use to make a “statement” in the room?
One element we love to use is custom wallpaper, which in this case was used for the headboards of the beds. At the Falkensteiner Hotel Montafon, we opted for carpets made by local craftsmen from coarse wool, which we transformed into a visual element. The patterns of these wallpapers are quite vibrant and complex, which contrasts nicely with the otherwise plain and restrained wood and plaster walls.
