We wanted to work out our legs during our hiking vacation at the Falkensteiner Hotel Schladming and finally experience a cool via Ferrata again and get our biceps burning. The medium-difficulty Hias via Ferrata (C/D) in the Silberkarklamm seemed perfect to use for this: short & crisp and yet very promising. To be exact, it is already in Ramsau – a stone’s throw from Schladming. So that you know what to expect from the Hias via Ferrata and the other via ferratas in the Silberkarklamm, we briefly summarize the most important facts.

FACTS & TOPOGRAPHY OF THE HIAS VIA FERRATA

Duration: 1:00h (in the climb) / 1:40h (total)
Ascent: 0:10h

TOUR DESCRIPTION

The via Ferrata “Hias” is a short, sporty via Ferrata. Due to the proximity to the valley and the short approach, it is also very suitable for less fit via Ferrata enthusiasts.

Arrival:
In Schladming follow the signs to Ramsau. After about 15 minutes you will reach the hiking parking lot Silberkarklamm.

Access:
The entrance to the gorge is about a 5-minute walk from the hiker parking lot (admission: 4,50€). Then you hike about 10-15 minutes over wooden footbridges in the gorge to the marked entrance rope bridge. The roaring water and the waterfalls are a real natural spectacle and very impressive.

Via Ferrata course:
The first action element is waiting right at the entrance: the rope bridge. Depending on the season, quite a lot of water rushes through the gorge. After a crisp entry ramp (C/D), another steep ridge follows to the second rope bridge. It is always worth taking a look back because the view into the valley and the gorge are magnificent. After the balancing exercise on the rope bridge, an easy A/B section follows and then a crisp D section. Once you’ve done that, you can take a short rest and enjoy the view before you conquer the steep edge with the help of small stepping sticks. Now you should also discover a high waterfall on the other side of the gorge.

Descent:
At the exit, keep to the left and follow the climbing tracks in the direction of trail 619. The path is relatively narrow and sloping for a short time and requires some concentration. The serpentines lead for a while through the forest to the Silberkarhütte. Now you are spoiled for choice: stop and return to the parking lot, do another via Ferrata or even add a hike?

HIKING TIP: FROM THE SILBERKAR GORGE TO THE ROMANTIC SILBERKAR LAKE

length: 9km
vertical meters: 1.300hm
Duration: 6h
More information about the route: outdoor active

If the Hias via Ferrata is too short for you, you can, for example, continue hiking after the Silberkarhütte at the end of the gorge to the Silberkarsee. The beautiful mountain lake is embedded in grassy hills and framed by a fantastic mountain backdrop. The way back through the Silberkar gorge then brings some cooling after the 1,300 meters in altitude.

Tip 1: Via Ferrata equipment can be rented, for example, at Intersport Bachler in Schladming (cost: 20€/day).
Tip 2: A great place to stop is the Silberkarhütte. Here you will find all Austrian specialties on the menu.

CONCLUSION

The Silberkarklamm is a small outdoor playground for athletes, but also families. While some may conquer a short, crisp via Ferrata, others can watch the brave climbers from below and enjoy the cooling gorge. Especially on hot summer days, it’s a great place to be. The various via ferratas and hiking trails offer plenty of room for spontaneity. The tour can always be extended depending on the weather and mood.
