Foam, steam, and pure relaxation – Especially now in the cold season, when the icy wind blows around our noses and our fingers freeze off while sending Whatsapp messages – we long for a warm, comforting place of peace and relaxation. Far away from ice scraping, snow mountains, and freezing cold, we have discovered it, the perfect retreat: the hammam.
A hammam is a special form of wellness – an oriental bath, where a special bathing ceremony is held. The oriental bathhouse has its origin already in antiquity, so it is a successor of the Roman bathing and thermal culture. The Arabic word hammam means “warming and bathing” and symbolizes relaxation, a feeling of comfort and purity.
A visit to the mosque, weddings, and circumcisions was preceded by a ritual washing in the hammam. In addition to religious cleansing, the hammam also played another important role: a meeting place to discuss news and the latest gossip. As already mentioned, people also visit the oriental bathhouse before weddings – through the intensive cleansing, people not only cleaned themselves externally but also washed off the past, so that they were ready for the future together.
Depending on the hammam, the procedure varies. But what always happens is the steam bath, a scrub, a foam treatment, and wonderful scents: the steam bath relaxes and prepares our skin for the best effect of the hammam treatment. We wrap ourselves in a traditional pestemal cloth and arrive at the bathing area. The hammam treatment begins with a body scrub and a special pouch glove. The scrub thoroughly cleanses the skin, stimulates regeneration and the skin becomes visibly softer, cleaner, and fresher. The cleansing is followed by a body massage with soap. The result is softer, gentler skin and a feeling of complete relaxation. After rinsing with water gently poured over the body from copper vessels, you stay on a hot stone for maximum regeneration of body and mind.
In many countries of the world, people celebrate their own traditional bathing cultures. While Finns swear by dry, hot sauna air, Russians work up a sweat in the banya. What both nations have in common is that they plunge into the cold after extensive perspiration. This abrupt change between extreme heat and cold is healthy and has a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. Washes in the hammam are gentler on the cardiovascular system, but no less healthy.
Many cities have city hammams that are the perfect getaway and feel like a short wellness vacation. However, if you long for a longer break, you can visit the hammam at Falkensteiner Hotel Kronplatz, Falkensteiner Hotel & Spa Iadera, and also Falkensteiner Hotel & Spa Jesolo and see the great effect for yourself.
