A Winter at the Mediterranean

Falkensteiner Resort Punta Skala

Cold, rough, and beautiful. Away from the summer season, the sea does not always show its friendliest side. But far from the tourist crowds and bright sunshine, the sea shows a whole new side in winter. Today, we show you four atmospheric and impressive reasons why #vitaminsea is definitely worth a trip, even in winter.

1. time for long walks on the beach

The coast of the upper Adriatic with its kilometer-long beaches makes every walker’s heart beat faster. At colder temperatures, the beaches are often deserted and untouched. No sunshades, no stalls, just endless expanses. On the beaches, the wind has gently smoothed the sand and the traces of the cold season can be seen in shells, seaweed, and driftwood. What a beautiful, calming sight this is. With a bit of luck, a rare guest visits the upper Adriatic beaches: snow. Slightly sugared, snow bathes the coast in a very special backdrop for the winter walk. Unsurpassed, of course, is the feeling of being the first to leave your tracks in the pristine sand.

For example, the beach promenade in Jesolo or the Laguna Veneta with its atmospheric canals and landscapes can be explored on foot. The rugged stone coasts in Croatia are also a dreamlike backdrop for long and extended winter walks.

2. TIME FOR CULTURE

You have to dress warmly, there is not as much daylight as in summer, and a small handful of cafés and restaurants may be closed. Nevertheless, cultural sites like Venice or Zadar have a special charm in winter.

The streets are empty, the people relaxed and at the entrances of museums or sights, you will find yawning emptiness instead of endless queues. The perfect time for a slow cultural day. A visit to a museum, exhibition, or gallery followed by sweet idleness with coffee, hot chocolate, or a good glass of wine. It’s a great way to while away an afternoon with a good book.

In Zadar, the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Ancient Glass, or the Museum of Illusions await you alongside an atmospheric Christmas market. In Venice, on the other hand, a visit to the Doge’s Palace or St Mark’s Basilica is worthwhile. A ride on the Vaporetto or a gondola also immerses wintry Venice in a magical light. It is the perfect time to soak up and enjoy the atmosphere of the city, far away from the summer holiday hustle and bustle.

3. time FOR SILENCE in harmony with nature

In winter, you often have the feeling of having the beach to yourself. That means one thing above all: quiet. No – or very few – man-made sounds. It’s just you and nature with its very own music.

You have to listen very carefully. To the gentle, sometimes rough, sound of the waves as they make their way towards the land. To the unmistakable call of the seagulls. To the mysterious whisper of the wind as it whizzes past your ears. And to the soft crackling of the beach under your feet. The concert of nature awakens wonderful images and emotions in our minds. It makes us relax, forget everyday life and dream ourselves into other worlds.
While you are out and about, you enjoy so many things: the beautiful natural scenery, the peace and relaxation, the soothing salty air, the physical activity, the wonderful sounds of nature and the feeling that the cold can’t harm you because you have pulled your scarf up to under the tip of your nose.

4. TIME FOR WELLNESS AND SPA

There is only one thing more beautiful than the wonderful time by the wintry sea: the feeling of happiness that flows through you when you return to the hotel after a long walk. The transition from cold to warm, when your body slowly warms up again and your fingertips tingle; the feeling of having really “aired out” your body and head and recharged your batteries.

After the cold and invigorating air outside, the retreat into the spa area feels really good. The warm sauna with a view of the rough sea is a wonderful way to end the day. A pleasantly warm hamam treatment or a relaxing massage is the perfect end to a wintry day by the sea.

After a day like this, two things remain the beautiful images of the day in your mind, and a feeling of bliss in your heart.
