5 Badeseen in Kärnten: Wo der Sommer zum einzigartigen Erlebnis wird.

Summer, sun, bathing fun – what should not be missing from the ultimate holiday experience in Austria? That’s right, refreshing, crystal-clear water for the perfect cool-down. Fortunately, Carinthia has a multitude of unique bathing lakes with top water quality to offer. Surrounded by an impressive mountain panorama and countless water sports activities, the lakes offer numerous opportunities to relax from the stresses of everyday life. Here are my top 5 bathing lakes that will make your summer an unforgettable one:
1

Pressegger See

A MUST during a stay at the Falkensteiner Hotel Sonnenalpe or Carinzia, both in the Nassfeld region, is a visit to the “Pressegger See”, also affectionately known as the ‘Gailtal bathtub’. With an area of around 55 hectares and an average water temperature of 28°C in summer, this lake is a real bathing paradise. The clear, clean water and the surrounding reed beds offer a unique natural landscape. For families, there are many shallow shore areas that are ideal for splashing around, as well as numerous playgrounds and leisure facilities. Hiking and cycling trails around the lake invite you to explore. A special recommendation from me: explore the Slow Trail and then take a well-deserved dip.

Weissensee

Just 16 kilometres (as the crow flies) north of the “Pressegger See”, the “Weissensee” is the perfect place for a relaxing day of swimming. The lake at the foot of the Gailtal Alps is often referred to as ‘the purest bathing water in the Alps’. It lies at an altitude of 930 metres and impresses with its crystal-clear water. The lake is ideal for those seeking peace and quiet, nature lovers and active holidaymakers. With a length of 11.6 kilometres, the “Weissensee” offers enough space for undisturbed swimming, diving and boating. The many small bays and the clear water, which reaches pleasant temperatures in summer, are particularly attractive.

Millstätter See

A perfect excursion destination from the Falkensteiner Hotels in Nassfeld and Katschberg as well as from the Schlosshotel Velden – is the “Millstättersee”. The “Millstättersee” is a true jewel in Carinthia and is known for its romantic sunsets and clear, deep blue water. The lake is the second largest in Carinthia and offers numerous leisure activities. The well-equipped lidos and the many quiet bathing bays make the “Millstättersee” a favourite destination for families and those seeking relaxation. Our insider tip for all those who love heights and an adrenalin kick:  The Millstatt lido with its historic landmark, the ‘diving tower’, is located in the centre of the village. This was reopened in 2019 and offers fun and action with jumps of up to 10 metres.

Faaker See

Just 17 minutes by car from the Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden, the turquoise-blue “Faaker See” is located at the foot of the “Mittagskogel”. From swimming and stand-up paddling to sailing and surfing – all water sports fans and action lovers will get their money’s worth here. For all those who want something a little more relaxed, numerous lidos and extensive sunbathing lawns around Lake Faak invite you to relax. The popular lido in Drobolach, also known as Panorama Beach, is superbly equipped, offers plenty of sunbathing options, a water slide and is accessible free of charge. For ultimate relaxation, we recommend a good book, a tasty drink of your choice and the sun loungers with parasols on the terrace of the lido. At the “Faaker See” you will find everything your heart desires!

Wörthersee

Last but not least, we are proud to present the famous lake right next to Schlosshotel Velden with the prestigious name “Wörthersee”. Nestled between forests and a sublime mountain panorama, the shimmering turquoise “Wörthersee” is located in the south of Austria. Whether stand-up paddling, waterskiing, wakeboarding or swimming, there is something for everyone here.  The “Wörthersee” also offers the unique opportunity to discover the lake by motorboat and explore the small islands and sandy bays in the middle of the lake.

Our recommendation: Book a stay at a Falkensteiner Hotel in Carinthia, pack your swimming gear and discover the impressive variety of bathing lakes in our southernmost province. With this in mind – happy bathing fun!
