There are many biker parties and motorbike meetings. But there is no comparison with “Rock the Roof” in Schladming.
The Planai Stadium in Schladming is a real hot spot. In winter World Cup winners are celebrated here, Andreas Gabalier played sold out Open Air concerts here and the Special Olympics were also held here. But once a year this impressive location belongs to motorbike fans from Austria, Germany, Switzerland and even those who come from Holland and Norway to the Ennstal.
“Rock the Roof” was held again this year, from 21 to 25 June. Yes, and how it rocked!!
“Rock the Roof” is without a doubt probably the nicest, most beautiful and also the biggest, privately organised biker meeting in Austria. The idea of the chief organiser, Sepp Spielbichler, and his event team seems to work out perfectly: small, fine and familiar is the motto in Schladming. The 12,000 or so visitors and bikers don’t feel overwhelmed by too many sales stands and annoying junk sellers, as is usually the case at other motorbike meetings. On the contrary, in the Planai Stadium, exquisite, high-quality exhibitors line up in a row and fit seamlessly into the familiar concept of “Rock the Roof”. In addition, there are some perfectly organised tours that pass through the Dachstein region and the surrounding area of Salzburg. Live bands round off the evening programme and the parade on Saturday is considered the absolute highlight anyway. Here you can really feel the enthusiasm of the locals, who are also among the numerous visitors to the event.
Moreover, apart from the official “Rock the Roof” programme, Schladming and the surrounding area have many great possibilities for you and your motorbike to have a blast.
We were once again guests at the Falkensteiner Hotel Schladming during our visit this year and, as always, we were thrilled. The hotel is located in the immediate vicinity of the Planai Stadium. This means you can leave your motorbike at the hotel and reach your destination in less than 5 minutes on foot. This is a real plus, especially in the evening if you want to enjoy a drink with your biker friends and not have to drive back to the hotel afterwards. Nevertheless the Falkensteiner Schladming is far enough away from the event area to be peaceful and quiet.
The 1,500 square metre wellness area of the Acquapura SPA offers plenty of opportunities to relax. Whether you decide to visit the sauna, jump into the pool, lie in the shade or have a massage is up to you. Especially after a longer motorbike ride, such a spa treatment or a relaxing sauna visit can work wonders.
There are countless possibilities for spending hours in the area around Schladming in the motorbike saddle. Schladming is the perfect starting point for many tours and a true paradise for motorbike fans. Many mountain roads invite you to cruise comfortably and after the winding rides you will be rewarded with a fabulous panoramic view every time.
A trip on the Stoder Zinken, an offshoot of the Dachstein massif, offers lots of driving fun, for example. The Stoder Zinken can be reached from Gröbming via the 12 km long Stoderzinken alpine road. The route is wonderfully winding, but not too demanding, so even those with less experience of driving in the mountains can really enjoy the tour. The “Schladming-Dachstein Sommercard”, which you get automatically in the Falkensteiner Hotel, also includes the toll.
At the top of the first car park, a short walk leads to the Rosemi Alm, a wonderful hut with a sunny terrace, where you can enjoy a fabulous Gröstl Pfanne and a refreshing shandy.
Speaking of cuisine. “Rock the Roof” also features the typical food found at biker meetings. Pizza, burgers and of course fried sausages.
Dinner at the Falkensteiner Hotel Schladming, however, offered us a really fabulous alternative. Even if the evening menu including starters and salad buffet is of the highest quality and leaves nothing to be desired, you don’t have to squeeze yourself into a suit and tie, guests in a “biker uniform” are also welcome.
We would especially like to mention all the employees of the hotel. We have now been guests at “Rock the Roof” and the Falkensteiner Hotel Schladming three times and the saying “Welcome Home” is not just a platitude here, it speaks for the whole experience. Many thanks again for the nice reception and we are looking forward to next year when the “Schmäh-rennt” will run again.
It is precisely this “welcoming feeling” that makes the entire motorbike meeting in Schladming so extraordinary. Organiser Sepp Spielbichler and his entire team simply make every biker feel really welcome. Moreover, this feeling is felt throughout the town when the mountain rumbles here for four days and the bubbling of the hot Harley Davidson engine sets the pace.
That’s why we’re already looking forward to a “Welcome Home” and a reunion at “Rock the Roof” 2018.
